area rug repair

Having originally operated solely as a wash facility, we noticed several of our customers were bringing their damaged rugs to us for cleaning, stating that although their rugs have experienced a lot of wear and tear, they can’t seem to part ways with them. Over the years we have found that this is the case with many area rug owners, and so, naturally, we sought out a way to help our customers preserve their meaningful timepieces. We now have a fully-equipped restoration department where skilled artisans dedicate their time to repairing even the most delicate of area rugs.

Repairing and restoring your area rug gives it an extended life span and significantly decreases its chances of being damaged further. By tending to, and repairing, the worn area, not only is that specific area now protected, but it prevents the areas around it from succumbing to the wear and tear as well — thus protecting your rug for several more years to come.

While repairing an area rug can make a great difference in the appearance and life span of a rug, it is important to note that in order for it to be successful, the repair must be done correctly, and professionally. Having spent over two decades caring for rugs from around the world, here at Refined Carpet | Rugs, our artisans have the necessary knowledge, and experience, to restore even the most valuable, or antique, of area rugs.

Repairing a rug is an element of rug restoration. With “restoration,” the objective is to bring the object—in this case, a rug—back to its original condition. Since area rugs are designed to be utilized over time—and if cared for, will increase in value—rug restoration is often quite beneficial. More often than not, age works to a rug’s benefit. For example, ordinary wear and tear ages the wool fibers, and oxidation progresses the hues in them, resulting in a lovely sheen. With that being said, a simple repair or two can protect your rug from deteriorating over time, while also preserving its natural aged features.

Authentic and professional rug restoration/repair requires that similar materials, if not the exact ones used to make the rug, are used when restoring and repairing it. This means that the materials must be of a similar age and sort, including similar kinds of dyes and fibers. To ensure we are properly equipped to restore rugs from any age or region of the world, we have a yarn “library” filled with yarn of all ages and hues.

While we are properly prepared to tend to any rug’s needs, it is important to note that some area rugs are not worth repairing, since the repair itself can cost more than value of the rug as a whole. So as to ensure restoring your rug is economically feasible, each rug is immediately inspected upon arrival, in order to determine if repair/restoration is advantageous.

As a company that prides itself on honesty, we vow to always provide each of our customers with an accurate rug valuation. If the repair is not worth a customer’s money, we promise to always let you know!

With over two decades of restoration experience, our artisans possess the necessary knowledge and materials to properly restore any rug.

Rug Resizing

An example of rug resizing. We removed the damaged, outside border and added a new blue side cord.

There are a few main reasons why our customers want their rugs resized. It can be due to damage on the rug, such as damage done to the fringe or the outside border. It can be because the rug will be moved into a different space that is significantly smaller or differently laid out, such as a hallway or small bedroom. Or it can be because the rug is quite large and would be better suited as a few smaller-sized rugs. These are just a few of the most common reasons why a customer might want their rug resized.

Regardless of the reason, we can help. We resize rugs daily, providing our customers with yet another custom-rug service. If you are interested in having your rug(s) resized, we suggest either contacting us or visiting us in store, with your rug(s) in tow. Our experts will give you a great idea about what can be done, how best to execute your wishes, as well as provide you with an estimate. We have to take measurements in order to properly estimate, so we always recommend bringing your rug(s) in when you can.
